The Western Piedmont Symphony

Sponsor and Musicians

The Western Piedmont Symphony (WPS), under the direction of Maestro John Gordon Ross, is celebrating their 52nd year of beautiful music and outstanding performances. The roughly 70-piece orchestra draws talented and dedicated musicians from across the Carolinas.

Under the baton of Maestro Ross since 1991, the orchestra has developed into the outstanding regional orchestra they are today. These talented and dedicated musicians have repeatedly won national acclaim and have established a record of commissions and premieres that is enviable by many orchestras of much larger size and budget. Maestro Ross and the orchestra members have won not one, but two first place awards in the American Prize: Professional Orchestra Division.

Each season the Western Piedmont Symphony performs five Masterworks Series concerts. In conjunction with their many outreach programs for school children, the chamber orchestra performs for many of the local school systems. WPS also performs several very popular outdoor “Pops” concerts each year throughout many of WNC’s mountain counties and Under the Sails in Downtown Hickory. They also serve as host to the Tesla Quartet, one of the most recognized young string quartets internationally who serve as the Hickory Metro Quartet in Residence.

The Western Piedmont Symphony was selected to premiere composer Edmund Barton Bullock's major symphonic work, the Appalachian Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in 2005, and is honored to perform the premiere for The Awakening of Humanity on a date to be announced.
